Amy’s delightful sampler depicts a wonderfully imaginative landscaped park with a velvet lawn, specimen fruit trees and shrubs together with a pinery flanking the terraces as they rise up to a classical temple. This young sampler maker has used her needle to create an ornamental pleasure ground so typical of the Georgian period.

Amy filled her sampler with giraffes, deer, squirrels, dogs, hares and an aviary of birds including owls, parrots, doves and partridges in pear trees. Butterflies, moths and bees can be found no doubt attracted to Amy’s garden by the lilies, tulips and roses that bloom profusely. This charming, idyllic scene is contained within a stylised carnation border.

Stitch count 307 stitches (w) x 276 stitches (h). Suitable for a confident beginner.

Sarah Mary Larkworthy was featured in the 2016 exhibition “Now Whilst My Hands Are Thus Employed – Three Centuries Of Historic Samplers” and is held in the private collection of Nicola Parkman. Sarah’s exquisite sampler is a wonderful example of the legacy left behind by long forgotten school girls and their needlework teachers. All the motifs have been counted out for you within the graph, there is no tracing required. The chart comes with stitch diagrams together with historical information about the period the sampler was stitched in. An online tutorial for this sampler is available.

Sarah’s exquisite sampler is worked almost entirely in cross stitch with the exception of a handful of backstitches. Sarah did not include a date on her sampler, however, from other dated samplers in Nicola’s collection, which include some of Sarah’s distinctive motifs, we are able to date the sampler to around 1840.

Worked in brightly coloured silks the sampler clearly shows the influence of the Berlin woolwork patterns which became so popular in Victorian England. The sampler is contained within a particularly beautiful and intricate floral border that captivates and delights. When viewing the sampler the eye is drawn to the lower section of the sampler where Sarah stitched a truly splendid parrot flanked by two pretty young ladies. Sarah incorporated 3 seashells into her design.

Stitch count 294 stitches (w) x 523 stitches (h). Suitable for all levels of ability.

When we first saw Hannah’s sampler we immediately fell in love with the boy riding his faithful dog, after all, “a boy and his dog make a glorious pair, no better friendship is found anywhere, for they talk and they walk and they run and they play and they have deep secrets for many a day”. We knew we had to reproduce this beautiful sampler to share with other stitchers.

Hannah’s sampler features: a honeysuckle border of many colours; a double alphabet and two houses; a windmill; a snake curled around a tree; a man and lady sheltering under an umbrella; a swan plus numerous birds and butterflies; a stunning basket of flowers and a double crucifix. Crucifixion samplers are uncommon and seldom do they have the charm of this sampler. To have a double crucifixion scene is rare.

The stitch count is 478 stitches (w) x 517 stitches (h). The sampler has been rated as suitable for all abilities.
