This sampler is brought to you as part of a series of “Little Gems” that are available as a pdf download by Hands Across the Sea Samplers.

The design is suitable for needleworkers of all abilities. The stitches used are cross stitch over two threads and satin stitch. There are two rows of cross stitches that have one long thread running under the stitches.

We have included, within the stitch guide of the pdf download, an adaptation to the satin stitch for those that wish to replace the satin stitched sawtooth border with cross stitch so that the sampler can be stitched of Aida or Linaida. We recommend that you use a count and type of fabric that you will enjoy working on.

Cicely recorded on her sampler that she was born on December 17th, the time period 1877 to 1898, Cobbe Place and her family’s motto “Magnanimus Esto”, which translates as “be great of mind”. These were some exciting clues that we were able to follow through in our quest to discover Cicely’s story. We uncovered a wealth of information on Cicely which we have shared within the pdf download.

Cross stitch ~ When working cross stitch the top stitch should always lie in the same direction for a neat and uniform finish.

Satin Stitch ~ Run a straight stitch between each thread of fabric in the direction shown on the chart. Use one thread making repeated passes until the desired
coverage is achieved.
