Harriet’s monochrome sampler, although small, has left behind a wealth of information about the little girl who patiently plied her needle and thread on a small scrap of linen in South Wales some 172 years ago. The twelve-year-old Harriet stitched her sampler at Cardiff School finishing on Thursday, October 18, 1829.

Harriet was not born in Wales. We find her baptism recorded on Monday, May 15, 1837 in the parish of Kempsford in the county of Gloucestershire. The Gobey family, just like branches of Nicola and her husband’s family, migrated to Cardiff to work for the Marquess of Bute in expanding the dock.

Within the pdf download we follow Harriet from cradle to grave.

At the very core of Hands Across the Sea Samplers there is a team of needleworkers who are passionate about antique samplers and being able to share those samplers with you. Hands Across the Sea Samplers are on hand to help those stitching our charts.

Thread Legend

Harriet’s sampler has been stitched with #671 from Au Ver à Soie’s range of Soie 100.3. We have provided suggested conversions for Soie d’Alger and DMC. There is no exact match in DMC; our suggested colour of #310, a hard black, is the closest.

Estimated thread quantities for varying linen counts and the number of strands of thread used have been listed below.

1 strand of Soie 100.3 on 46ct linen

671 Aged black

1 strand of Soie d’Alger on 36, 40 & 46ct linen

3416 Aged black

2 strands of DMC on 36ct linen

310 x 2 Hard black

2 strands of Soie d’Alger on 28ct linen

3416 x 3 Aged black

2 strands of DMC on 28ct linen

310x 2 Hard black

Linen Sizes

The design area is 143 stitches (w) x 143 stitches (h). Our calculations have included a 3″ margin for finishing and framing.

The sampler can be stitched on Aida, Linaida, or linen. The model was stitched using 56ct Zweigart-based linen that was overdyed to a lighter shade of Marbled Pointer from xJuDesigns. We would also recommend using Legacy Linen’s Victoria Sponge Cake in 30ct, Corn Tassel in 37ct, Foxtail Millett in 45ct, or Sycamore Seedpod in 53/63ct. You should use a count and fabric that you enjoy working with.
