Heather’s sampler is available as a PDF download. The image shown above is a computer mock up of the original sampler. The sampler (image shown below) that Nicola stitched for her grand daughter has been adapted, personalised and the colours changed so that they catch the eye of a young child.

The chart of the dedication Nicola stitched has been included in the PDF download.

Heather’s charming sampler is a delight to the eye. Stitched when she was only eleven-years-old in Stratford, New Zealand. We believe that “SMS” stood for St. Mary’s Diocesan School.

Heather diligently stitched her alphabet in upper and lower case, her name, age, the year and a delightful array of motifs. Three parrots, two butterflies, a turkey, a darling teddy bear sporting a dickie bow, flowers and a giant snail fill the lower half of her sampler.

Heather’s sampler has been reproduced with a palette of eleven colours from Au Ver à Soie’s range of Soie 100.3. We have provided conversions for Soie d’Alger and DMC. Only one spool or skein of each colour is required.

Heather stitched her sampler with cross stitch over 2 strands of linen, running stitch and a handful of double running stitches. The project has been rated as suitable for needleworkers of all levels of ability and can be stitched either on Aida, Linaida or linen. The original was stitched on 26 count (approx.) in a colour similar to DMC 712/739.

Stitch Guide

Heather stitched her sampler with cross stitch over 2 strands of linen, running stitch and a handful of double running stitches. The project has been rated as suitable for needleworkers of all levels of ability and can be stitched either on Aida, Linaida or linen.

Cross stitch ~ is made up of two stitches worked over one or two threads. You should make all your stitches cross in the same direction for a neat and uniform finish.

Running Stitch ~ The stitch is worked by passing the needle in and out of the fabric at a regular distance.

Double running stitch ~ On the outward journey you mark out the motif and on the return trip you fill in the gaps. It is also called Holbein stitch.
