Jane’s sampler is certainly one that catches the eye! A young Welsh school girl diligently stitched a sampler that is dominated by a decorative vase overflowing with blooms. You can almost smell the fragrant scent of the Cabbage Roses, also known as Rosa Centifolia, “the hundred petal rose”.

Nothing adorns a room like a floral arrangement. Jane should be commended for her distinctive sampler. The roses tower over the vase, then tumble over like fountains of colour. And all contained within a border of plump strawberries. Doesn’t this sampler make your fingers itch to stitch?

The original sampler was stitched on Penelope canvas with wool thread and is of Welsh origin. Whilst acquired at auction in Carmarthenshire, there is no Jane Hopkins to be found in this Welsh county in the 1871 census. We believe that the young maker was one of four Janes, who ranged in age from 8 to 13 years, that were born and living in the county of Glamorganshire, Wales.

Wales will always be a special place. The Welsh Valleys are filled with the warmth of her people and an identity forged over centuries: in her homes and chapels, on the playing fields, and in the strong magical voices of her men’s choirs raised in the Welsh National anthem “Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau”, which translates to “Land of My Fathers”. We believe that Jane’s sampler is a special one. We hope that you enjoy stitching her as much as we have enjoyed reproducing her.

Jane’s sampler has been painstakingly charted by Sandra Moffitt and lovingly stitched by Leona Sweeney. At the very core of Hands Across the Sea Samplers there is a team of needleworkers who are passionate about antique samplers and being able to share those samplers with you. Hands Across the Sea Samplers are on hand to help those stitching our charts. If you need assistance or have any questions, we can be reached via email, address shown below, or the contact page on our website.

Stitch Guide

The reproduction of Jane’s sampler is predominantly worked with cross stitch laid over two threads of linen; the other stitch used is satin stitch. The sampler is suitable for needleworkers of all abilities.

Cross stitch ~ When working cross stitch the top stitch should always lie in the same direction for a neat and uniform finish.

Satin stitch ~ Run a straight stitch between each thread of fabric in the direction shown on the chart. Use one thread making repeated passes until the desired coverage is achieved.

Hands Across the Sea Samplers are on hand to help those stitching our charts. If you need assistance or have any questions we can be reached via email, address shown below, or the contact page on our website. Our website has stitching tutorials which can be found in the “sewing basket/tools” section.
