This delightful sampler is brought to you as the fifth in a series of “Little Gems” that are available in this time of global crisis as a .pdf download by Hands Across the Sea Samplers.
This sampler is a postcard from the heart. The sampler, designed and stitched by Nicola as a gift to her husband, has been inspired by samplers in her private collection and conveys several messages to her husband.
The ‘language of flowers’ was a Victorian-era means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken.
The English are famous for their roses, and roses are deeply implanted in the English heart. They bring a sweetness of fragance and beauty of colouring, the rose is the queen of an English garden blooming from early summer until the Christmas bells ring out.
This flower is one of the oldest and most popular flowers known to man. Long a symbol of love and passion, the ancient Greeks and Romans associated roses with Aphrodite and Venus, their goddesses of love. It has been used for hundreds of years to convey messages without words. Each colour of the rose offers a distinct meaning and in the language of flowers the varying shades of colour can mean different things. Nicola chose to depict a multi-coloured rose to convey a message which is partially explained within the pdf download. Like many of the hidden meanings in antique samplers, there is an additional cryptic message which will remain unexplained and is intended to be understood by only one other.
We hope as you ply your needle your work will bloom just like beautiful flowers in a garden. Your completed sampler will be the fruit of your labour and a lasting treasure for you to enjoy!
