This sampler is brought to you as part of a series of “Little Gems” that are available as a pdf download by Hands Across the Sea Samplers. The project has been rated as suitable for needleworkers of all levels of ability and can be stitched either on Aida, Linaida, or linen.

This is an original design by Sandra which we have finished into a pin cushion. The little design would also be delightful as a framed sampler.

The phrase “Roses are red, violets are blue” can be traced as far back as 1590 and a work by Sir Edmund Spenser, “The Faerie Queen”, which features the lines:

It was upon a Sommers shynie day,

When Titan faire beams did display,

In a fresh fountaine, farre from all mens vew, …

She bath’d with roses red, and violets blew,

And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.

Appearing first in early spring, violets are known for their everlasting beauty. They attract all kinds of pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds, and some kinds of violets appear again in the late summer or early fall.

Violets are most commonly associated with love and are the birth flower for the month of February. Nicola celebrates her birthday in February and her middle name is “Violetta”. She was named after her paternal grandmother Violet.

The design area is 147 stitches (w) x 103 stitches (h). Our calculations have included a 3" margin for finishing and framing as a sampler. If making into a pin cushion or other “small”, you may need to allow a different margin for finishing.

The model was stitched on 40ct Buttercream from Lakeside Linens. You should stitch Spring Violets on your preferred type of fabric, colour, and count whether that be Aida, Linaida, or linen. Some suggested alternatives would be Legacy Linen’s Victoria Sponge Cake in 30ct, Corn Tassel in 37ct, Foxtail Millett in 45ct, and Sycamore Seedpod in 53/63ct.
