This delightful sampler is brought to you as part of a series of “Little Gems” that are available as a .pdf download by Hands Across the Sea Samplers.

“What we hope ever to do with ease, we must learn first to do with diligence”

Agnes’ sweet sampler is worked mainly in red and green, and follows the Scottish practice of recording family initials. Three sets of initials are stitched with black thread which indicated that those relatives were deceased. We have found Agnes in family history records and the pdf download includes information about her and her family.

The sampler is executed in band form with cross stitches over two threads of linen. Each band is separated by a dividing row worked in a different pattern. Agnes diligently recorded not only her name, the year she finished her sampler and her age but included “Wigton” the place that she lived.

The sampler is stitched entirely in cross stitch over two and can be stitched on Aida, linaida or linen. Agnes is suitable for needleworkers of all abilities and would make an ideal “starter” project for those wishing to explore samplers.

At the very core of Hands Across the Sea Samplers there is a team of needleworkers who are passionate about antique samplers and being able to share those samplers with you.

Thread Legend

Agnes’ delightful sampler has been reproduced with a palette of 3 colours from Au Ver à Soie’s range of Soie 100.3. We have provided conversions for Soie d’Alger and DMC. Only one spool or skein of each colour is required.

The model was stitched on 45ct Legacy Linen in Foxtail Millet. For a lower count of linen we would recommend Legacy Linen Corn Tassel in 37ct or a colour similar to DMC shades 712 or 739.

Soie 100.3          Soie d’Alger        DMC                     Colour Description

773**                   3446                     3799                     Pewter grey – very dark

** as a result of the disruption caused by COVID-19 there is a global shortage of some of the most popular shades of silk.  If you experience a problem, we recommend 3723 as an alternative to 3724 and 774 as an alternative to 773.

LINEN SIZES

The design area is 52 stitches (w) x 205 stitches (h). Our calculations have included a 3″ margin for finishing and framing. If working on an uneven linen such as 52/62 we would recommend that you orientate your linen so that the lower count is on the horizontal.

Stitch Guide

The sampler is stitched entirely in cross stitch over two and can be stitched on linen or Aida. M.E is suitable for needleworkers of all abilities and would make an ideal “starter” project for those wishing to explore samplers.

Chart Correction

On the first pdf issued “pewter grey – very dark” the DMC the shade number 3799 was incorrectly listed as 3779. We apologise for the error.

Please note that the extra stitch in the two circled H’S below should not be stitched.
